SAN FERMINES

July. The San Fermin Bull Run in Pamplona  from the 6th

To 14th. This is the festival par excellence..

The fame of these renown bull runs and their massive popular participation has spread around the world. The origins are lost in history. There are mentions in chronicles dating back to the 13th century. Although they were previously held in October, they now take place in July, for reasons of the weather.

The San Fermin festival came into being as a combination of three separate festivals : religious ones in honour of San Fermín, which have been celebrated since time immemorial; the commercial festival held from the 14th century onwards, and the bullfighting one, celebrating the bullfights, also dating to the 14th century.

The combining of the festivals, and the changing of the date, 1591 resulted in the “Sanfermines”, immortalised in Hemminway´s novel “Fiesta”, published in 1926.

This tradition is not unique to Pamplona and, of the other options, of particular note are those of Cuellar, which take place in the countryside and through the streets, and date back to 1215, therefore being considered the oldest in Spain.
